Figurative language

Take a look at the following elements often included in poems:

Now, after watching the video, post an example of each one. It could be one you found in the poem you will present in class or something you use in your "everyday vocabulary" when you "speak and practice English everyday".

  1. The poem I wil present in class is called 'Brown Penny' by Wlliam Butler Yeats and I think it has some elements of the figurative language *obviosly* :D, for example in te poem the author speaks with a penny (symbolims) also in the poem is this part: 'I am looped in the loops of her hair' (metaphor) and this other: 'Till the stars had run away and the shadows eaten the moon' for me in this sentence is present the personification. other elements are present in the poem that I chose but I will talk about them in class.

    1. it's true what you mientioned.. but remember: when dealing with metaphors, you have to state what's the indirect comparisson being made.

  2. The poem commonly have all these elements, perhaps other poems do not have all the elements but I think that the most important in knowing how to identify each of these characteristics of a poem. For example, the metaphor, consisting describe or qualify something through their similarity or analogy with something else or the hyperbole, that is an exaggeration so that the person is made a picture that can not forget... etc. It is very important to take into account all these factors because helps us understand the figurative language of poetry.

you're right. It's important to identify these elements; specially since figurative language is not only in poetry but in everyday english as well

  3. The poem that I presented in class was “An awful tempest mashed the air” By Emily Dickinson. It has some elements of figurative language. It doesn't have hyperbole. The personification is “the clouds were gaunt and few”. The Metaphor is “the monster’s faded eyes turned slowly to his native coast”. The simile is “a black, as of a spectre's cloak”. The symbolism is the awful tempest.

  4. In order to have a figurative language when expressed in a poem, it is important to know that this has elements such as metaphor, simile, symbolism. There are poems that do not, as there are others that if, in the particular is good to read those holding elements which are thus able to determine and interpret them.

  7. My poem is named Absence by Pablo Neruda and It has just two elements about figurative language and they are Hyperbole and Methaphor. The Hyperbole is "We have drunk up all the water and the blood" this is an exaggeration. In terms of the metaphors are "As when your eyes close upon the gift of life" this refers to the death, "we have drunk up all the water and the blood" is to quench the thirst of love, and the last is "we bit each other as fire bites" this is about the wounds made each other", the other elements like Personification, Simile, and Symbolis are not found in this poem.

    1. Good; you're right, Maria. Just this line "We have drunk up all the water and the blood" can be taken as a metaphor due to its significance to the general meaning of the poem.
      nice pic ;)

  8. The poem that I presented in class it hasn't tittle Well I think that each category to create a poem is important and interesting to know every one of them catches my attention is the metaphor because sometimes exaggerates what is that for example the metaphor of the poem to take is "I ask only that you want the pigeons usually look "suggests he wants a life with his girlfriend and wants to have children with her.

And you're right. They're interesting and important because you can have/use those elements in everyday vocabulary--
Be careful; when you have an exageration it's a hyperbole.
