Is poetry important?

Poetry is vital language. Poetry relies on the writer's feelings, history and perceptions, so every person has the background needed to write poems. Because poetry draws on the senses and the senses give deep access to memories and feelings, poetry writing is relevant and interesting.

Poetry is ancient. The most primitive people have used it, and the most civilized have cultivated it. In all ages and in all countries, poetry has been written – and eagerly read or listened to– by all kinds and conditions of people – by statesmen, lawyers, farmers, doctors, scientists, clergymen, philosophers, soldiers, kings and queens. In all ages, poetry has been regarded as important, not simply for pleasure, but as something central to each individual'’s existence, something of unique value, and something which makes us feel better off for having and which we are spiritually impoverished without.

Initially, poetry might be defined as a language that says more and says it more intensely than does ordinary language. In order to understand this fully, we need to understand what it is that poetry “says”. Poetic language is employed on different occasions to say quite different kinds of things. Therefore, poetry is language of different uses. While novels, short stories and plays bring us a sense and a perception of life, their concern is with experience. The poet may create new experiences for the reader in which the reader can participate and which will give him or her a greater awareness and understanding of the world.

Poetry takes all life as its province. Its primary concern is not with beauty, not with philosophical truth, not with persuasion, but with experience. Beauty and philosophical truth are aspects of experience, and the poet is often engaged with them. Poetry as a whole is concerned with all kinds of experience – beautiful & ugly, strange & common, noble & ignoble, actual & imaginary. One of the paradoxes of human existence is that all experience, when transmitted through the medium of art, becomes enjoyable. Even painful experience is pleasurable when poetry romanticizes hard labour, poverty and even death.

Poetry comes to us bringing life, and focuses on giving us a better understanding of life. Between poetry and other genres of literature there is one sharp distinction. Poetry writing is a friend to all writers. Engrossing and honest, poetry extends universally to all members of society. Poetry exists to communicate significant experience imaginatively and creatively, deepening our knowledge of the senses more poignantly.
Poetry can be inspirational on the highest level, when it provides the reader with a precious affair, frequently incandescent, giving off both light and heat. Finally, poetry is a kind of multi-dimensional language. It is directed at the whole person, not just at his understanding. It must involve the reader’'s senses, intelligence, emotions and imagination. Poetry achieves its extra dimensions per word by employing devices including metaphor, allusion, sound, repetition, rhythm, irony, symbol, connotation and imagery. Using these resources and the materials of life, poetry, in its highest form, comes alive on the page.

These are  just some of the assumptions people have created about poetry over the years. However, it does not mean it is still accurate just because it was true at one point. So, taking that into account, i would like you to comment on the following:
  1. Is poetry relevant nowadays? Why?
  2. Does it have an important role in students' academic life?
  3. Do you appreciate poetry right now? Why?

  1. Throughout history, poetry has been relevant. Poets have used language to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas. Poetry is about conveying emotions through the use of words. It's not something that's easy to do because it include rhythm, rhyme, meter and line breaks, poets have addressed everything from the nature of love or the beauty of a spring day to complex social issues. It has an important role in students' academic life because reading and writing poetry helps students to become more aware of the ways in which language can be used and the rhythms, images and meanings that can be created. I appreciate poetry because it can convey complex thoughts and emotions in a neat and orderly environment, while maintaining a sense of beauty or meaning.

  2. Yes it is. It is relevant because it shows us the feelings and the emotions of the people, something that we not always see by talking. Of course I think poetry have an important role in the academic life of the students because as students we need to know what is the figurative language funtion, how they works in poetry and even most important, how we use it in the dayly life. According to the third question of course I do. I'm not gonna lie saying that now I love poetry but when I read a poem again I will do it with more enthusiasm.

  3. Poetry is important because this teaches us to take into account every detail is in it and not as a bunch of boring lines. You can find different emotions and feelings in just a paragraph. I think it plays an important role in our academic lives because it shows every thing in this world, questions, answers that we need to know, and through it we can express feelings and this makes us sensitive to others. I do not appreciate poetry in a hundred percent but I have to say I have learned to interpret and read it differently and not before it was read by read, I liked it a little bit.

  4. I consider that poetry is of great importance as this is the best way you have the poets and people in general to express their feelings, desires and opinions. Poetry is not easy to do since it has a number of parameters to realize it, but a great tool to improve language.

    1. You're right, Ana. but you're wrong at the same time :p
Any poem it's easy to write, but great poems are not. Also they're easy to read and sometimes fun but they're not that easy to understand it accurately. That is a quality that you just get with practice. Read a lot, as much as you can, and you'll get interested in reading.. poetry and reading in general.

Yes it have an important role in student's academic life. Because you get vocabulary and improve the way that you use to speak and that's really good. 6. The poetry is still relevant because it never gets old, always get new writers and others who express their emotional state through poetry. Poetry turn helps us in acquiring new words and reading practice that leads us to imagine things that are not reflected in it and leave it to our interpretation or imagination. I appreciate that poetry is not the first time I read one, there are people who in a poem have tough times and I have been reading it I realize that my problems are not as great as those of the other person.

  12. Some conclusions arise From all of your answers.. First, poetry has been, is and will be relevant for mankind despite the fact not many people appreciate it or at least like it. Also, every student is introduced to poetry at some pint of their academic career; the thing is the contact is very breif and not that productive due to several reasons. Finally, if you like it or not, you appreciate it or not, you'll only get better by reading it..
