2nd Activity

PARTS OF SPEECH - TYPE OF PHRASES


Read the following sentences and state the type of word or phrase you see underlined or in bold. Each one of you has to choose one sentence and post your analysis according to the criterion worked in class. 


1. Vampires Dairies is my favorite television show, but I also love True Blood.

2. The student wiped the white board that was filthy with last week’s notes.

3. The trendy fashion designer released her new line on Wednesday.

4. Trina and Hareem went to a bar in Hollywood to celebrate their anniversary.

5. Wicked Regina cast a spell on the entire city, so the citizens decided to rebel.

6. While waiting for the paint to dry, Angela went to Home Depot, and Martin organized the
kitchen appliances.

7. After listening to the Kanye West CD, I have new respect for his music.

8. After the teacher chose groups, John and Sara were selected as partners for a project, yet
Sarah did most of the work.

9. I love skiing, my brother loves snowboarding, and my sister likes snow tubing.

10. If you do not want to join marching band, you should find another extracurricular activity.

    CD= is a noun. Using the Semantic Criterion the word "CD" is a noun because it can be changed por another word refering to a thing.
    HIS= Using the Syntactic Criterion, "His" is a adjective because it always is used before a noun.
    10) If you do not want to join marching band, you should find another extracurricular activity.
    DO NOT WANT= Using the Syntactic Criterion, "Do Not Want" is a Verb Phrase because its after the subject.
    MARCHING BAND= Using the Semantic Criterion, "Marching Band" is a Noun Phrase because if you change it for any other word refering to a activity the sentece is ok.
    ANOTHER= Using the Semantic Criterion, "Another" is a Adjective because modifies the noun.

    - Their aniversary: Using the syntactic criterion it's a Noun Phrase because it begins with a possessive adjective before the noum.

    - Wicked Regina: Using the syntactic criterion, it's a Noun phrase because it is before a verb.
    - On the entire city: Using the syntactic criterion it's a P.P (Prepositional Phrase) because it begins with a preposition.
    - Decided: Using the morphological criterion, it's a regular verb in past because it ends with "ed".

    -Snow is a noun according with the semantical criterion, because we could change this word to refer about another things like "fire"

    -Waiting: Using the morphological criterion, It's a noun in present continuous that ends in "ing".

    -For the paint: Using the syntactic criterion, it's a prepositional phrase (P.P) because the phrase begins with the preposition "for"

    -Kitchen appliances: it's a noun phrase based on the syntactic criterion, because the phrase begins with an article and next to an article there's always a noun, a phrase which starts in this way is a noun phrase.
